Atal Bihari Vajpayee is a prominent Indian Political Leader. He was Prime Minister of India from 1998 to 2004. he also held this position for about three weeks in 1996. Prior to that he was Foreign Minister of India under Government of Morarji Desai.
He belongs to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), one of the two most prominent political parties in India - the other one being Congress. He has been been associated with this Party since 1951, as founder member of its earlier version - Jana Sangh.
He is considered fairly successful both as Prime Minister and as Foreign Minister. India had the capability for making nuclear weapon for many years, but it was during his tenure that India actually made and tested nuclear bomb. He is also credited with initiating a successful massive programme of road building in India.
Vajpayee, and his party are believed to maintain a stiff stand towards Pakistan, its neighboring country. However, as Prime Minister he took initiatives to develop better economic and cultural ties with Pakistan.
In addition to being a politician, he is also a good poet, and has published several collection of poems in Hindi language. He has also been editor of several periodicals at different times. Vajpayee is well known for his oratory. His speeches are maked by a style that is both entertaining and informative. Because of this his public meetings have always been a crowd puller.
He is a member of Lok Sabha (The Indian House of Commons) currently also. But he is now practically retired. Currently India is in the process of conducting its general elections, but Vajpayee is not contesting i this election.
Vajpayee was born on December 25, 1924 at Gwalior in Central India. He has obtained a Masters Degree in Political Science.
