The bright sunlight could represent Ponyboy's reality versus the darkness of the make-beleive movie world that he is leaving behind. Ponyboy tells us that he enjoys books and movies. We could infer that this is something he does to escape from the harsh reality of his everyday life.
For Ponyboy, being engrossed in the conflicts of a movie's characters, keeps him from having to deal with his own. As long as he is watching Paul Newman or Clint Eastwood take on the bad guys, he doesn't have to think about his parents deaths, being jumped by Socs, Darry not loving him, or Soda being a dropout.
When Ponyboy leaves the darkness of the movie theatre, he is stepping out of his fantasy world and into his own reality. He was able to leave it for a little while, but now it was time to return to those conflicts and deal with them.
