The person who is credited with discovering the biological cell is Robert Hooke. He saw the cells in cork while looking at it through this microscope in 1665.
The first living cells were observed by Jan Evangelista Purkyně in 1835, while observing plant tissue. Just four years following this, the Cell Theory was developed by Matthias Jakob Schleiden and Theodor Schwann. It stated that all life forms are made up of cells, which are of different types and contain information to form organs that perform all the functions in an organism. The cells have hereditary information which allows them to reproduce and hence the organs can grow larger and cells which die can be replaced.
