Coronary arteries are the blood vessels which supply the heart muscle with blood and oxygen. When a blood clot blocks the coronary artery, the blood supply and oxygen supply to the heart muscle are cut off resulting in injury to the heart muscle. This in turn causes severe chest pain and shortness of breath.
If the blood supply is not restored quickly, irreversible death of the heart muscle will occur resulting in scarring of the heart muscle.
