There is conflict scattered within the entirity of The Alchemist. A conflict, when referring to a literary text, can occur both within a character and when a character comes to face an outer-lying force. Depending on whether you're looking for a physical conflict or a more emotional conflict, we could look at a few different scenes.
Concerning emotional conflicts, my personal favorite, and perhaps the most recurring, deals with the boy and his heart. Though he isn't always aware of it, much of the boys journey leads up to his coming to peace with his heart. He has to learn to communicate with his heart, to understand what it wants so that his actions can better the both of them.
When referring to an outside conflict, we could look at the disagreement between the boy and merchant. The boy has an idea and he has to physically encounter the merchant, to get across his point, in order to succeed. The conflict isn't within any longer; instead, he must utilize outside sources and interact with other characters.
