Atticus Finch is a widowed father of two, and attorney in a small Alabama town. Probably because of his honest, straighforward manner and moral integrity, he is appointed to defend a black man in an impossible case, as the man is accused of the assault of a white woman. Calpurnia works for him, and has since he married his late wife; she cooks, cleans and looks after the children when he is working. Jem is Scout's older brother, principal playmate and partner in crime; he is heartbroken and angry after Tom Robinson is found guilty of assault, and it is his arm that is broken when the children are attacked by Bob Ewell. The broken arm is first mentioned on the first page of the novel when Scout begins reminiscing about the events that led to the incident.
